DIY Valentine’s Day Sweater

Whether you’ve found yourself with the Christmas blues now that the holidays are over, or you’re just looking for something to check off that resolution list where you said you would “try new things” … this simple, fun, and oh-so-sweet sweater will cover all the things! Not only with this DIY make the person receiving it feel all the love, but it will also add a special personal touch to their Valentine’s Day wardrobe!

This was the first sweater I have ever hand-embroidered, and only the second embroidery project I’ve tackled (the first being our Christmas stockings!), so this project is perfect for even the newest of beginners!

Supplies:

  • Knitted Sweater

  • Yarn (I used three colors: red, light pink, medium pink)

  • Darning Needle

  • Template

Here are the links for some of the exact products I used, including the Bow Initial template. Both the option to purchase the digital templates and the option to purchase the already printed for you template, are included:

Use the lighter shade and a chain stitch to outline the initial.

If you’ve never embroidered before, I highly recommend this video to learn the stitch easily!

To create the sweater, I followed the instructions from the Instagram videos posted by @stitchin.with.samantha (who also happens to be the creator and seller of the template). I used the lighter shade of pink to create a single chain stitch around the initial, followed by using a heavy chain stitch with the medium pink shade to “fill-in” the letter. The red is used with a chain stitch to create the bow on the initial, as well as the small bows and heart embellishments around the initial. The smaller bows and hearts around the initial are not included in the template, so you can place these anywhere you’d like and make them any size and in any amount that you feel completes your sweater!

Once I was finished with the sweater, I decided to add a special detail since I was making this sweater for our daughter, Isla Rose. On the left sleeve, where the inside of her wrist would be when wearing the sweater, I stitched the words “I love you” so whenever she wears it, she will see those words. If you haven’t seen her reaction to learning what the surprise was on her sweater, you have to watch it!

Whoever you make this sweater for will not only look absolutely adorable, but they will also feel special when they wear it - knowing it was made with love, by you!

This sweater makes for an excellent, heart-felt gift that is sure to become a treasured keepsake! Happy stitching…and may your Valentine’s Day be full of love (and a little bit of crafting magic)!
